Google AdSense co-founder Eytan Elbaz is announcing a round of funding from a group of all-star investors for his stealthy startup Scopely. Investors in the round (the amount of which was not disclosed) include Lerer Ventures, Greycroft Partners, Howard Lindzon, Terri Semel’s Windsor Media, David Cohen, Dave Tisch, Gil Elbaz, and Evan Rifkin.
For background, Elbaz co-founded Applied Semantics, which he sold to Google for $100 million in 2003. Applied Semantics ended up becoming Google AdSense, and Eytan stayed on as Head of Domain Channel for Google. He left Google in 2007 to pursue other projects.
Eytan declined to reveal exact details on what Scopely will focus on, but said that the startup will disrupt the social space that is “ripe for innovation.” He says that social networks have grown up quickly and Scopely’s product, which is being programmed in Node.js, will play in this arena. He adds that online advertising will play a part inScopely as well.

Google's playable Les Paul guitar doodle cost businesses around the world £166m in lost productivity
The Google guitar doodle marking Les Paul's birthday last week cost the world £166million in lost productivity.
The late guitar pioneer was celebrated on what would have been his 96th birthday with his own playable doodle.
Anyone logging onto the Google homepage on June 9 and 10 would have seen the authentic-sounding doodle above the search box and could have strummed away using either their mouse or keyboard.

The company spent just £9,300 on the design but, according to website Extreme Tech, this small investment ended up costing a staggering £166million as office workers took time off to play the interactive 'guitar'.
Workers spent a total of 10.7million hours distracted by the doodle, the weblog said.

Google's Guitar Logo Plays An Encore
Feature Lets Visitors Record 30-Second Songs By Strumming Chords
(CNN) -- Internet procrastinators got a second day to improvise virtual guitar tunes, thanks to the popularity of Google's homepage guitar logo.
The "doodle," as Google refers to its one-off logo designs, featured a six-string guitar, which let visitors record 30-second songs by strumming chords with a flick of the mouse.
Google posted the widget in honor of electric-guitar guru Les Paul's 96th birthday Thursday. Paul died in 2009 at age 94.
"Due to popular demand, we're leaving the Les Paul doodle up in the U.S. for an extra day," Google wrote via Twitter. "Thanks for jamming with us!"
Remember the interactive Pac-Man doodle from last year? It was such a hit that Google gave it a permanent site. It's unclear whether the Les Paul tribute will get the same treatment.
Whether it was 30 seconds of random strumming or a complicated cover, Google users have come up with a catalog of original songs since Thursday.

Baidu and Google Celebrate Duanwu Festival With Doodles
Call it Duanwu, Dragon Boat or Dumpling festival: Both search giants, Baidu and Google are celebrating the festival today with doodles on their front pages.
Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China are having public holidays today. Sadly, there is no day off here in Singapore. But as Chinese, we do still celebrate the festival with our families, mostly by just eating dumplings together.
The festival occurs on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar on which the Chinese calendar is based.
Besides eating dumplings, the festival is also a day for dragon boat races. The video below, with more than 400,000 views, provides a good overview on the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival. If you’re interested to learn more, check out the Dragon Boat Festival page on Wikipedia.
Have a great Dumpling Day!
Five advantages of trading forex market .
1. 24 Hour Market: Since the forex market is worldwide, trading is continuous as long as there is a market open somewhere in the world. Trading starts when the markets open in Australia on Sunday evening, and ends after markets close in New York on Friday.
2. High Liquidity: Liquidity is the ability of an asset to be converted into cash quickly and without any price discount. In forex this means we can move large amounts of money into and out of foreign currency with minimal price movement.
3. Low Transaction Cost: In forex, typically the cost for a transaction is built into the price. It is called the spread. The spread is the difference between the buying and selling price.
4. Leverage: Forex Brokers allow traders to trade the market using leverage. Leverage is the ability to trade more money on the market than what is actually in the trader's account. If you were to trade at 50:1 leverage, you could trade $50 on the market for every $1 that was in your account. This means you could control a trade of $50,000 using only $1000 of capital.
5. Profit Potential from Rising and Falling Prices: The forex market has no restrictions for directional trading. This means, if you think a currency pair is going to increase in value; you can buy it, or go long. Similarly, if you think it could decrease in value you can sell it, or go short.

Google close to settling drug ad probe
Google is close to settling a federal criminal inquiry into its acceptance of advertisements from companies selling unlicensed pharmaceuticals, according to a person involved in the case.
The leading search engine disclosed this week that it had reserved $500m to resolve an unspecified US justice department probe into its advertising practices, with speculation quickly turning toward counterfeit and unapproved drugs.
The Wall Street Journal reported late on Thursday that the pending deal would resolve an investigation of drug ads by the US justice department, with participation of the Food and Drug Administration and the federal prosecutor in Rhode Island. A person familiar with thematter confirmed the talks to theFinancial Times.
The justice department, FDA and Google all declined to comment.
Google, Microsoft and Yahoo havebeen changing their policies under pressure from licensed pharmacies, major drug makers and the FDA to do more to filter out ads that tout prescription medications, often ostensibly from Canadian companies but manufactured in China, India and elsewhere.
Many of the drugs advertised are counterfeit, raising intellectual property issues. The FDA and the Drug Enforcement Administrationhave also complained about a public health threat, because some US consumers have died from drugs bought online without a prescription.
The issue has been complicated by varying international laws. It is illegal to import unlicensed drugs into the US, but not illegal for Canadian firms to sell them. Companies that manufacture the knock-offs may not be violating the laws of the places where theyare based.
The search engines were thoughtto have legal risk. A section of the1996 Communications Decency Act protects internet service companies from being held accountable for virtually any content provider by users or advertisers, but there is an exception for federal criminal cases. The search engines in 2007paid $31.5m to resolve justice department objections to ads run for online gambling firms.
Online drug sales have been one of the largest sources of income for cybercrime gangs. A large percentage of unwanted commercial e-mails touts such wares, and viruses often steer infected personal computers to such websites.

newsroll! 27/03/2010
- "Yves and his partner, Pierre Bergé, were so difficult and so evil and made my life such misery. It was an awful time for me. Pierre and Yves were just evil". Palavras super duras, vindas de Tom Ford, e que aparecem no livro Saint Laurent, mauvais garçon, escrito pela jornalista Marie-Dominique Lelièvre. O livro tenta desmistificar a aura de gênio de Yves Saint Laurent e colocá-lo simplesmente como um designer viciado em drogas e com muitos segredos. O NY Times faz uma super matéria a respeito do livro e a repercussão de seu lançamento, feito ao mesmo momento em que a exibição Yves acontecia no Petit Palais em Paris;
- a LVMH Moët Henessy não pára de perseguir seus direitos contra a Google. A gigante ganhou seu caso dia 23 de março na European Courts of Justice e, a partir de agora, a Google não poderá utilizar um trademark sem que a dona desta marca autorize. Esse é mais um passo da LVMH para fechar o cerco contra os produtores de produtos falsos. Ela já conseguiu que o Ebay proíba a venda de produtos da Louis Vuitton e agora consegue que uma das fontes principais de busca na internet pare de anunciar - através do Google Ad Words - produtores de produtos falsos;
- vocês sabiam que a Dior tem um museum? Nem eu. Mas o Musée Dior, que fica na casa onde Christian Dior cresceu em Granville, tem exibições constantes sobre a vida do criador da maison, assim como exibições temporárias. A mais recente é "Le gran bal Dior", que mostra os vestidos de festa mais importantes da marca. A idéia da exibição é mostrar como as soirées e festas do início do século XX impulsionaram Christian Dior a fazer seus exuberantes vestidos. Quero ir a Granville a-go-ra!;
- as datas da São Paulo Fashion Week e do Fashion Rio estão definidas para a temporada primavera/verão 2010/11. O Fashion Rio acontece no Pier Mauá de 27 de maio a 01 de junho enquanto a São Paulo Fashion Week acontece do dia 08 a 14 de junho no Pavilhão da Bienal;
- inspiração da semana: as ilustrações dedicadas à moda de Carine Brancowitz. Quem dera que eu pudesse desenhar assim... ai ai...;
- say hooray for sale! A Suprema Corte norte-americana voltou atrás na decisão sobre preços sugeridos. Pelo período de três anos (de 2007 a 2010), os donos de marcas poderiam dizer às lojas revendedoras que preços elas deveriam revender seus produtos (mais importante que isso, dizer até quanto eles poderiam diminuir os preços). Com isso, as lojas poderão voltar a ter seus "massive sales" em produtos de luxo;
- celebridades são gente como você. Inspiração da semana de hoje para NUNCA se sentir mal consigo mesma: Mischa Barton tem celulite e tira meleca do nariz (cortesia de nossa amiga Jessie, que nos indicou o link). Mas nem tudo é piada: a roupa dela tá SHOW. A foto tem seu lado ruim (para Mischa, eu até fico mais consolada com as celulites), mas recomendo copiar o outfit, adorei o combo Ray-Bans + t-shirt + saia florida + relógio masculino + salndália gladiadora;
- as cinzas de Alexander McQueen serão espalhadas pela Ilha de Skye, no norte da Escócia. Essa era uma decisão que o designer havia tomado há tempos atrás e que seus irmãos e pai pretendem honrar. McQueen era super conhecido por dizer que a Escócia era onde ele se sentia em casa;
- aparentemente o mundo dos estudos está se relacionando melhor com o da moda (ana carolina e pedro alberto sempre temdemsia!). Natalia Vodianova, Michael Kors e Anna Wintour foram até a Harvard Business School falar no Harvard Forum sobre doenças relacionadas ao peso. Lá, Kors anunciou que não usará mais modelos abaixo da idade de 16 anos. Também né, Michael, desde quando seu público alvo tem menos de 16? Nada mais coerente...;

- Muitos devem conhecer Andre Leon Talley por causa do filme The Spetember Issue, documentário sobre a Vogue US. Mas pra quem é fashionista mesmo, sabe que Talley é editor-at-large da Vogue US há anos - e a surpresa de vê-lo somente como colaborador nesta edição foi grande. Bryan Boy nos explica o por quê;
- é fã incomensurável de tartan e xadrez em geral? Então recomendamos a Dress to Kilt, festa anual comandada por ninguém menos que o ator Sean Connery. Com passaporte escocês, Connery faz a festa em benefício da organização de caridade Friends of Scotland, que ajuda veteranos de guerra nas Ilhas Britânicas e nos Estados Unidos. A festa tem também um desfile de moda que estrela - claro que sempre - o xadrez. Esse ano o tema é "Mad for Scotland";
acabou a farra...
