Jhansi Ki Rani


Jhansi Ki Rani
Locals paid rich tributes to Jhansi Ki Rani Lakshmi Bai, the warrior queen who had struck terror in the hearts of the British during theRevolt of 1857, on the occasion of her martyrdom day at her birthplace in Bhadaini on Saturday.

The programme was organised by Jagriti Foundation, in association with Maharani Lakshmi Bai Janmsthan Smarak Samiti. Addressing the function, DIG Lalji Shukla highlighted the personality and sacrifice of the warrior queen. Speaking on the occasion, Vishwambhar Nath Mishra described her as a brave daughter of the city. The function was also addressed by Anand Bahadur Singh, Ramyash Mishra and others.

According to the district gazeteer, she was born in `Varanasi in 1835. In 1844, she was married to Ganga Dhar, the rajah of Jhansi and, on his death in 1853, she herself became the ruler of Jhansi. She lived in Varanasi for four years. Presently, work is in progress for the development of her birthplace as a memorial.
